Happy Birthday Cora!

4 Dec

Yup, another fabulous birthday to celebrate!

Cora has become one of my best friends in the city. The funny part of our relationship is that after 4 years of attending the same college we met out one night in NYC.

Since then, we’ve gone on multiple “girl” dates, ate our way through many NYC restaurants and had our fair share of interesting nights out. Living in the city wouldn’t be the same without her and I’m so happy we were able to surprise her for her 24th birthday. Her boyfriend Steve  and her roommate Kerri put together an amazing surprise dinner at Punch on 21st and Broadway with local and out-of-town friends and we had a blast. Then we headed down to Plunge at the top of the Gansevoort Hotel for more celebrations!

Cora’s cake was a gluten-free chocolate cake with butter-cream frosting and orchid flowers climbing up the side. I have to admit, I’ve always been a skeptic when it comes to gluten-free baking, but this cake turned out very fresh and delicious!

This is only the beginning of my experimentation with gluten-free desserts. I hope Cora’s ready to be my taste-tester!!

Enjoy!

Baking School – Week 5

24 Oct

Well it was another successful baking class this week! We made a whole new batch of puff pastry, baked a Napoleon and a Fruit Tart from the Puff Pastry we made last week and we finally got to ice our Reine de Saba chocolate cake!

At this point in the class I feel that I can make pastry cream in my sleep and roll out enough puff pastry to feed NYC. I’m beginning to feel like a real baker!

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted a recipe and I’m going to do my very best to change that ASAP! Leave a comment with some suggestions! I’ve already had a couple:

1) Petits Fours            2) Apple Pie

What are your thoughts?

Check back soon for some delicious treats! Also, thanks Jimmy for the great pictures 🙂

Enjoy!

Escaping the Heat!

22 Jul

So it has officially reached into triple digit temperatures in NYC and for the past week, it has been above 90 degrees everyday. This is not the ideal baking weather, but the incentive behind it is well worth it. This weekend is one of my best friend’s from college birthday! I’m heading out to CT this afternoon to spend the weekend with some amazing people, go tubing on the river and out to celebrate. What better way to celebrate a birthday than with a 4 layer vanilla cake with chocolate ganache and strawberries.

Keep a look out for the recipe in the coming days!!

Stay cool and enjoy the weekend!
